Burn only dry wood and have your chimney cleaned approximately once every 2 years.  Look here for the best woods to burn.
Shut the damper or flu while not in use.
Do not leave the fire burning when you go to sleep because your flu or dample will remain open all night.  Put your last log on an hour or two before you go to bed and shut flu or damper when the fire is near completion.
Keep the damper open periodically in the summer to create a natural cooling draught.
Seal the chimney with fiberglass insulation if you do not use your fireplace.  You can also use silicone caulk to seal the doors.
